1. The Hobbit House
Location: Wales, UK
The hobbit house was built by Simon and Jasmine Dale for under $5,000 US. Carved into a hillside, the home was made using natural materials such as wood, mud and grass. Inside, a wood-burning stove and solar panel provide the home with heat and power.
2. The Raven Loft
Location: Pender Island, Canada
After purchasing a plot of land for $35,000, Geoff de Ruiter built this tiny home among the trees for only $8,200. The house has a composting toilet, gravity-fed tap, a mini-fridge and induction stove. A set of stairs that doubles as the main shelving unit leads to the second floor, where there’s a double bed, and a loft for guests.
3. The Nautilus House
Location: Mexico City, Mexico
Designed by architect Javier Senosiain, the Nautilus House is stunning and unique, both outside and inside. While the outside is designed to look like a shell, the inside resembles a cool cave – textured walls and lush greenery line the staircase, while the large stained glass window fills the room with light.
4. The Sparrow House
Location: Cornwall, UK
This tiny home has a double bed, kitchen with a burner and cold box, and a bathroom with a wash basin and composting toilet. Perched in a tree with stunning views of the sea and surrounding countryside, the Sparrow House is designed to help you relax and unwind.
5. Casa Barthel
Location: Florence, Italy
Immersed among the pine trees and olive trees, Casa Barthel is equipped with a bedroom, kitchenette and a bathroom with a shower. But perhaps the best part of this tiny home on stilts is the outdoor terrace that overlooks the stunning Tuscan landscape.
6. The Mill House
Location: Vastra Karup, Sweden
The Mill House was designed to represent the Swedish ritual of sauna and bathing. Located in the countryside, the small home promotes relaxation and zen.
7. Cave House
Location: Granada, Spain
The fully equipped cave home sits at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. The atmosphere is quiet, allowing for a relaxing getaway, vastly different from the bustling city life. The cave has a private terrace with a barbecue that overlooks the quaint town of Monachil.
8. Pirates of the Caribbean
Location: Topanga Canyon, CA, USA
The Pirates of the Caribbean themed house is nestled among waterfalls, ponds and a lively tropical environment. The house itself has a bedroom, kitchenette and bathroom, but the real treat is the outdoor oasis. Featuring an outdoor bathtub, firepit, hot tub with crystal fireplace, barbecue, large deck and hammocks for lounging – this home embodies the ultimate tropical vacation.
9. The Pod-Idladla
Location: South Africa
The Pod is a prefabricated, modular home, which can either stand on it’s own, or be combined with other pods to create a larger living space. Each space is designed to have a dual use, but typically the pod has a bedroom, a guest room or office, a shower area, a kitchen and an open outdoor area that adds to the overall size of the living space.
10. Treehouse at Kilauea Volcano
Location: Hawaii, USA
This custom-designed treehouse is situated among volcanoes. The treehouse can be accessed via a meandering 100-foot path through the forest. The house itself is built on two levels and is connected by a ship’s ladder. The main level has a living area, kitchen, composting toilet and outdoor shower, while the second level has a bedroom and porch. Outside there is a hot tub and dining area for dining under the trees. The entire area is adjacent to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
